ASL stands for American Sign Language, the primary language used in the deaf community in the United States. There are other forms of Sign Language in different countries. If you were to go to France the sign language would be different than in America.
If there is one thing I want to emphasize is that ASL is a language! It is different than signing a couple of words while talking. Just like with Spanish, French, and Italian there is a grammatical system that is unique to ASL. There are also different types of Sign Language. There is SEE (Seeing Exact English) sign, Baby sign, ASL, Pidgin (mix of different), family signs, and geographical signs. They are different but all have there uses.
